In 1983 the Greater Moncton Street Rods (GMSR) was formed by 25 automotive enthusiast families. As a not-for-profit organization, they have held many successful car shows. Their first car show, Fun Run, drew 12 entries. The long running series grew in popularity and size.
In 1994 with co-sponsor, the city of Moncton, they hosted the Canadian Street Rod Nationals, known as Canats 94. This was the largest and most successful car show in Atlantic Canada at that time. It brought cars from all over Canada and parts of the USA. Through this, the Club received well-deserved national and international recognition.
In 2000, GMSR created the Atlantic Nationals Automotive Extravaganza. A committee of seven members spearheaded the planning of this event that has grown by 2008 to the largest automotive event in Canada. Almost 1800 participants and estimated 140,000 people for the week-end event..
